The banding of the domes is because of differences in clay material and porosity on the sandstone levels: the orange bands include oxidised iron compounds in levels that dry out far too immediately for cyanobacteria to multiply; the gray bands are composed of cyanobacteria developing about the area of levels of sandstone wherever dampness accumulat
